Brasil Guitar Duo

Posted in Music on October 4, 2008 by KristenF

A co-worker had a ticket to a classical guitar concert at the Ethical Society. She thought to ask me since she could not use it, and I didn’t know how I could refuse. It turned out to be a $20 ticket that got me a seat in the front row! And how perfect that the duo would be South American – the Brasil Guitar Duo.

I’d walked and driven by the Ethical Society easily 100 times, since I used to live just a couple blocks away, behind the Scholar Shop. I’d not known it’s purpose, but I had heard of many other concerts there. And it’s no wonder; the acoustics are amazing. Well, now, I was in the front row, so I had some advantage. It really was great though. Two nylon-string guitars with no amplification.

The two men, who were maybe my age, had met in Sao Paolo as teenagers while studying guitar. The songs of their first half were classical adaptations, mostly by one of the two performers. There was a several-part series of Bach adaptations. The second half, however, they dedicated to playing songs and rhythms of Brazil. They did not want to play the most traditionally known, but rather influences less heard from different areas of the country. It is, indeed, a very large country. The other of the two wrote one piece the performed. And the last piece, the encore, was a samba, but not like I have ever heard.

All together it was amazing and beautiful. I was very lucky to sit in the front, not just because of the acoustics, but because I love to watch the hands of instrumental performers. It also is always wonderful to hear the guitar played in yet another inspiring way. (I had been listening to Willy Porter earlier in the day.) They had cool things to set their feet on as well; just click on the picture. I’m sure they are typical for concert guitarists, but I don’t think I have seen them before. Comfy.

This is the first show of the duo’s fourth tour this year. It is the first time they have been to St. Louis. I believe the are playing another show at COCA in University City

This was posted on the stlbloggers.com website. I didn’t even know there was a Tower Grove Farmer’s Market. Music, dogs, yoga, and fresh food???? I can’t wait to check it out!

From their website:  tgmarket.org

Our vendor count almost doubled, the Harvest Sessions music series drew large crowds, over 20 students attended the free yoga class each week, rescued dogs found good homes at our Dog Day event, and hundreds of people learned about sustainability issues at our Green Living series.”

What – The Tower Grove Farmers’ Market is a 501(c)(3) corporation with a wide variety of local produce, meats and other local food products.

When – 2008 Season: Every Saturday from May 10 through October 25, 8:30am until 12:30pm.

Anthem

Posted in Music, My Life on January 9, 2008 by KristenF

Three and a half hours sleep. Should make for a fun day. But what matters is that I had a fun night!

After years of prodding, my good friend Joe (Forensic) started a monthly trance night (titled Anthem) at the Upstairs. It sucks that it’s a Tuesday night, but I will make it work. I just will. Perhaps I will ask to work a late day or something. The guest DJ, Jared (Identity), also kicked it. Can’t wait to be this tired next month!
